Burnz F/Crooked I "Clap Back"
Born and raised in Phoenix, AZ Burnz has a vision that extends beyond trying to make a catchy radio single and pulls his music inspiration from a wide variety of artists ranging from: Redman, DMX, 2pac and Nas, all the way to John Coltrane, and Billie Holiday.
His roots go back to the origin of The Zone’s (AZ) hip-hop scene in the notorious stomping grounds of, Maryvale -one of West Phoenix’s grittiest neighborhoods. He was fortunate enough to be introduced to the culture at a young age through his older brother/mentor, Pound (R.I.P.) one of The Zone’s first producers that helped establish the local urban scene in the late 1980’s through the early 90’s.
Burnz is currently recording his debut LP, which will feature Crooked I, Styles P, DMX, Spider Loc and Hot Rod among others.

Ashy L Bowz Win 2009 Underground Music Awards!!!!
This past Sunday the awards ceremony for the 7th Annual Underground Music Awards was held in the world famous BB Kings. Many of the future stars of the hip hop and RnB comunity were in attendance as well as the legendary Darryl McDaniels from the revolutionary hip hop group RUN DMC as well as iconic rapper Freddy Fox aka Bumpy Knuckles and Reggae legend Redd Fox. Also in attendance were current Hip Hop sensations Freeway and Red Cafe.
The hip hop group Ashy L Bowz were one of the many talented Underground Artists that were nominated for various awards. The ALB'z were the favorites to win the category of Most Original Group or Duo but were skeptical as they had lost this very category two years in a row. As the winners were announced the crowd seemed deadly silent except for the whispers of "Ashy L Bowz" throughout the room. As the winner was announced those whispers turned to a roar of applause and excitement for one of the hardest working groups in the underground music scene.
As the Ashy L Bowz accepted their award the group seemed to thank the entire venue by name before demanding everyone to say No to Lotion and dissipating in a cloud of ash.
"This award means a lot to us" the group said "Anyone that knows us knows we strive for originality from our name to our music to our stage show. So to be recognized for that is a huge honor." In a new millennium hip hop industry of unoriginality and style biting, A and R's and music executives should definitely be paying close attention to the Ashy L Bowz movement they are definitely something that the game has been sorely missing.

Soulstice f/Kev Brown "Birds Eye View"
Soulstice's author's note for "Bird's Eye View":
I'm from Chicago, but I've lived in the DC area for several years. Living in DC, you're so close to the politics and decision-making, but you're no more able to affect what happens than anyone else. It raises your awareness, but also increases your level of frustration at times. Conceptually, this song is an important piece of the "Beyond Borders" project because sometimes the best way to impact the world is to take a look at closer look at the way we do things here. I wrote the line about needing a Black president well before Obama was elected and I'm happy to see that prophecy fulfilled. Kev Brown, one of Maryland's finest rhymers and beatsmiths, joins me on this one...we actually recorded this joint at Kev's house.
"Birds Eye View" appears on Soulstice's forthcoming LP "Beyond Borders"

Arrest Made In Dolla's Murder
A Georgia man was booked Tuesday on suspicion of murdering up-and-coming Atlanta rapper Dolla in a brazen, broad daylight shooting outside an upscale West Hollywood mall.
Dolla, 21, was a popular protégé of chart-topping hip hop singer Akon, rapped on a 2007 single with T-Pain and was in Los Angeles working on a new album with Akon's Konvict Muzik label.
The suspect, Aubrey Louis Berry, 23, shot Dolla in the head at around 3 p.m. Monday in the parking area of the popular Beverly Center mall, cops said.
He fled the scene before officers arrived but was taken into custody less than two hours later at LAX airport.
"He was carrying a loaded firearm in the ticketing area when officers walked up and said 'Do you know what this is all about?' He got up, and said 'Yes I do. I have a gun in my waistband, don't shoot," Sgt. Jim Holcomb of the Los Angeles World Airports Police told the Daily News.
Holcomb said airport authorities got a description of the suspect around 4 p.m. Monday, and an unarmed traffic officer spotted Berry about 15 minutes later.
A woman entered the same terminal and said she was Berry's girlfriend, Holcomb said. Police questioned the woman and also were investigating a car returned to a Hertz rental lot at the airport that may have been the getaway vehicle, he said.
Dolla, whose real name is Roderick Anthony Burton, was waiting in the mall's parking valet area with another rapper, D.J. Shabbazz, when the shooting took place, Dolla's publicist Sue Vannasing told the Los Angeles Times.
She said Dolla had been involved in an altercation with other passengers on a recent flight from Atlanta to Los Angeles, but it's not clear if that incident was related to the shooting.
Cops have not released a motive.

Dizzee Rascal Drives A Mini
Dizzee Rascal says that despite being one of the biggest pop stars in the UK right now, he's still drives a Mini - because he refuses to pay high car insurance. The rapper, whose single 'Bonkers' is on its way to becoming one of the biggest-selling tracks of the year, says he's still wary of the credit crunch.
"I drive a mini right now," he admitted, adding "It just don't make no sense to throw that kind of money away on insurance" (The Sun).

Is Keeping It Real Just A Catch Phrase?
Early last week reports of Virgina resident Anthony Gonzalez had been charged for his involvement in a 10 million dollar drug ring. Gonzalez had been the manager of the Clipse, a duo knowing for their unique style of cocaine raps. Shortly after the announcement Malice released a video distancing himself from the drug trade that he raps about. Insisting that his his real life and the lifestyle he raps about are 2 different worlds. During his explanation of it just being entertainment Malice confirmed something that many of us already know, rappers are full of shit.
Since it's inception, hip hop has placed an emphasis on authenticity. This is one of the key elements that has given hip hop it's appeal, it's candidness and brutal honesty not seen in other genres. But does authenticity in hip hop still exist? The success of an artist like Asher Roth who doesn't fit the textbook image of a hip hop artist, nor does he try to, speaks volumes. The public appears to think no less of an artist because they don't fit a stereotype. That said one can question whether Roth's hit single "I Love College" would have had the same success if he was black.
The innovation in hip hop is gone and the industry has essentially become a game of follow the leader where everyone attempts to copy the success of past acts through imitation rather than originality. But can we really blame the artists? The success and popularity of artists like Gucci Mane who is more known for the authenticity of his street life than actual talent doesn't really help the situation. Gucci Man is never going to win an award for his musical or rapping talents, however he did kill someone.
As Jay-z once said, artists are afraid to be themselves. With doubt's of the marketability of their real lives artist often turn to the reliable and tested image, drug dealer. It is the music BUSINESS after all and at the end of the day and the point is to sell a product and make money.
Is authenticity still a requirement in hip hop or is it just a memory of the past that old heads and backpackers keep clinging to?

Purple City's Shiest Bubz - "The International Bud Dealer"
The longtime Dipset affiliate, CEO of Purple City, connoisseur
of piff, and Harlem hero Shiest Bubz is back on the map. Since
Purple City's last release in 2007, "Jim Jones Presents:
The Purple Album," Shiest has quietly refined his flow, his sound
and reconfigured the core members of the Purple City movement.
Now he returns with "The International Bud Dealer" (a/k/a "The I.B.D.")
which is really Shiest's effort to make himself the most important
solo artist in the Purple City movement. "The music business is funny.
When Purple City first came on the scene in 2005, a lot of people brushed them
aside as an insignificant Dipset spinoff group and then their debut album
sold over 65,000 units worldwide. Now, here we are in 2009... Dipset
looks to have dissolved and along with Jim Jones' Byrdgang and
Juelz's Skull Gang, Shiest's Purple City movement is as relevant as ever in
terms of New York street rap. A lot of people are going to be surprised by
the quality of the music on this new album. It also does not hurt that Shiest
probably has the most entertaining overall persona in all of New York hip-hop
right now... if Cheech and Chong ever wanted to be a rapper, they would definitely
want to be Shiest Bubz," Says Chuck Wilson, the CEO of Babygrande Records.

Law 6: Court Attention At All Cost (Joaquin Phoenix's Rap Career)
I dunno how many of the readers are familiar with the 48 Laws of Power but I just happened to be reading the chapter on that law when I caught this video. I had originally planned to use the title for a post on 50 leaking Rick Ross' baby's mother's sex tape but this clown is doing everything written in the chapter.
The book states:
Part I: Surround Your Name With The Sensational And Scandalous
Draw attention to yourself by creating an unforgettable, even controversial image. Court Scandal. Do anything to make yourself seem larger than life and shine more brightly than those around you. Make no distinction between kinds of attention - notoriety of any sort will bring you power. Better to be slandered and attacked than ignored.
The whole concept of dude rapping is just so sensational that it screams scandal. Plus that ridiculous beard is definitely unforgettable.
Part II: Create An Air Of Mystery
In a world growing increasing banal and familiar, what seems enigmatic instantly draws attention. Never make it too clear what you are doing or about to do. Do not show all your cards. An air of mystery heightens your presence; it also creates anticipation - everyone will be watching you to see what happens next. Use mystery to beguile, seduce even frighten.
This is what Joaquin has been doing since he announced his rap career. Since day one his career has been shrouded in mystery and we still don't even know if he is really serious or if its all one big elaborate hoax. Throw a "documentary" chronicling his career that neither confirms or denies his seriousness and we are still left asking if he is just doing what he does best, acting. When you take into account that most of us have never actually heard his music the situation starts to resemble the story of Mata Hari that is outlined in the book.
Joaquin Phoenix has done an amazing job getting people talking about him, dude wasn't this popular when his movies where hot. If he his serious then I hope the best of luck to him.

Krumbsnatcha - Feeling
Boston Springfield Native (so why is he wearing a yankee's cap?) recently dropped a video for the Kanye sampled track "Feeling", produced by Mr Walt of Da Beatminers, off his new album Hidden Scriptures. Krumbsnatcha has been known amongs hip hop fans for sometime, having done songs with Gangstarr and becoming the first independent artist to ever receive the much coveted Hip Hop Quotable in The Source magazine.
Since I'm already on the topic of Krumbsnatcha I challenge y'all to find a copy of the movie The Urban Massacre, hands down the most awful yet still incredibly entertaining movie I've seen in my life (I'm not even sure Killa Season is this bad). I found it on vhs in a bin at Walmart for something like $1.
Saigon & Statik Selektah "All In A Days Work"
For those that need to be brought up to speed, Saigon and Statik Selektah teamed up and created an album from scratch in a single day, hence the name All In A Days Work. The duo worked a deal with Amalgam Digital, the home of Joe Buddden, to release the album March 17th in digital format, a week after the creation of the album, something that had previously been unheard of as it usually takes 60-90 days set up time.
